Conversational French Elementary 1

Wednesdays, 10-11.30am – £56 for a block of 4 weeks

You have studied French at basic level and you are ready to start talking! This is the course for you: thanks to carefully designed exercises, your communicating skills will improve.

You can expect to learn more about the past and future tenses, whilst consolidating what you have already acquired.

We will be following a specific training programme, but this does not mean this will be definite and fixed: for me, it is important to follow the group’s needs, and adapt the course to your needs, rather than to what I have planned originally!

By the end of the course, you will have increased confidence with speaking and will be able to cope well with basic conversation, and you will be able to handle short newspaper articles etc…

Conversational French Classes

Day & Evening Classes.

Learning a new language can appear quite daunting, especially in a class full of strangers. Read More…

Advanced French Conversation

This French class  is suitable for people who already have a substantial vocabulary and a good grasp of French grammar. It focuses on improving fluency and facilitating conversation in French through stimulating and rewarding games and exercises.

It also tackles common grammar mistakes/problems through play, which alleviates the sense of repetitive boredom that could stem from studying grammar more formally and renders it much more appealing and almost effortless.

Classes are kept small in terms of size, as there is a maximum of 8 people per group. This ensures that everyone can participate in the course of the lesson  and that no one can “hide”. It also helps create a friendly atmosphere, which is very conducive to learning.

Availability of the Advanced French conversation classes:

  • Day: Tuesdays, 10-11.30am
  • Evening: Tuesdays, 8-9.30pm

Grammar

Through the use of board games, the group shall improve on specific aspects of grammar that students find tricky at this level.

  • Past tense revision (perfect, imperfect and pluperfect)
  • Conditional
  • Subjunctive
  • Pronouns
  • Relative clauses

Fluency

Using various online activities, the group will focus every week on developing new vocabulary and more complex sentence structures, and help focus conversation on specific themes that are of interest to everyone in the group.

Vocabulary & knowledge

Every week, students receive a short list of words and structures studied in the course of the previous week. The group’s teacher starts each lesson by going over that new French vocabulary in class with the students who explain it into French: this process enables a deeper understanding allowing the students to memorise the newly acquired structures better, seemingly effortlessly.

French Private Tuition

On occasion, we are asked to tutor people individually. There are a number of reasons why you may require private tuition: maybe you lack confidence and would like to brush up with individual lessons before facing a roomful of people. Or maybe you would like to organise classes for family or friends. Whatever your reason, please do give us a call: we will find the right solution for you… And it may not be as expensive as you’d expect: classes cost £15 per adult (based on a group of 3+)!

This may be beneficial for a range of reasons:

» Maybe you need to gain confidence first before joining a group.

» You may be a couple, who would enjoy doing something together, at your own pace.

» You may not fit into any of the traditional categories because you have specific needs, whether professional (specialist vocabulary) or academic (grammar), or because of learning difficulties, and need individual attention.

» Maybe you are a group of friends, looking for something interesting to do together, around a coffee or a nice cup of tea.

» Or you may have a schedule that does not allow you to attend classes on a regular basis – for instance if you travel a lot, or if you work off-shore.

Whatever your own circumstances may be, our individual tuition is tailor-made for you, using carefully designed material, or on occasion manuals if we feel you may respond better to a more traditional method of learning. All training material used in class is included in the fees, so there will be no nasty surprises – and the materials are yours to keep: no one will ask you to give them back at the end of the course!

Intermediate 2 French: Conversation & Grammar

Wednesdays 6-7.30pm – £56 for 4 weeks (6 hours)

This group is suitable for people who have already a substantial knowledge of French, but wish to improve on their fluency.

This course will focus mainly on conversational skills, and you can expect the lessons to be conducted in French (though, on occasion, I might use English to quickly explain a finer grammar point!).

Various themes will be explored, thanks to different means: articles from the internet or from the French press will help gather vocabulary that will prove extremely useful for discussion, and, although grammar will not be formally explored, we will look at those aspects that you feel less confident about.

The course will help you feel more confident whilst discussing a number of topics that come up in conversation with friends, or with colleagues.

I may integrate short film extracts in order to improve your fluency and develop more understanding of more colloquial French – but will discuss this with the group beforehand.

Improve your French through Films!

This French course is aimed at people in Edinburgh with a good grasp of the language (from intermediate or B1). It provides a good mix of activities, both in terms of speaking and listening, aimed at developing your vocabulary and your understanding of rapidly spoken French.
The integration of video material (films) allows you to get to grips with slang and less formal aspects of the language. We normally spend 2 sessions over a single film.

The first session involves watching the film (usually with English subtitles), followed by a discussion about the general themes explored in the movie. We also explore the film’s background (directors, script-writers, actors). ATTENTION: the first session usually starts earlier (typically at 7.30pm) to allow time for discussion after watching the film!

Then a further session includes the study of extracts, with carefully designed exercises, followed by a discussion of the issues explored in the film – and beyond!
